September 2008
To quote Franklin D Roosevelt from 4th March 1933, “… the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This is appropriate for three reasons: the current problems started in the US; we are facing a potential economic crisis similar to the one they had then already entered; and his words are probably even truer now than 75 years ago.
The ongoing financial turmoil owes a lot to exceptionally bad practice within the banking sector here and in the UK, exacerbated by greed amongst professional investors who simply failed to understand the nature of the securitised mortgage products they were taking on – at what must have looked like highly attractive terms.
